About Peter Shields

Captain Peter Shields, San Francisco Police Department (Retired)

Captain Peter Shields earned a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University in San Jose, California, and is also a proud graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston University.

Throughout his distinguished 25-year career with the San Francisco Police Department, Peter held various critical positions. His assignments included serving as a defensive tactics and physical fitness instructor, a sergeant in Special Investigations, and the lead investigator for Hate Crimes. He also worked as a lieutenant overseeing Station Investigations and later the Special Victim's Unit, where he managed cases involving Missing Persons, Financial Crimes, Human Trafficking, and Elder Abuse. As a captain, Peter was assigned to the Traffic Company, where he oversaw the Traffic Enforcement, the Traffic Crash Investigation Unit, the Commercial Vehicle Unit, and the motorcycle officers known as the Solos.

In 2004, Peter faced a violent attack in the line of duty, an experience that earned him the honor of receiving the Purple Heart. After enduring a long recovery and rehabilitation process, he returned to his beloved work with a renewed commitment to supporting the health and wellness of fellow officers.

Today, Peter's passion for horses and competition has inspired him to begin a new chapter in his life as a competitive reining participant.
